Abstract

Objective: An ethno botanical study was conducted among the various tribal communities of central Indian states (Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh) to document their ethno veterinary knowledge and practices prevalent among them since times immemorial. Material and methods: First hand information on ethno veterinary uses of plants was recorded through interviewing of old and experienced local veterinary doctors of different tribal groups. Result and discussion: During the study it was observed that they utilize about 35 plant species belonging to 22 families for treatment of various ailments and diseases of their domestic animals. The recorded uses were compared with published literature and found that uses of 15 plants are new and uses of other plants are found similar but they are used by different tribal groups of different states.

Abstract

Alectra chitrakutensis (M.A. Rau) R. Prasad & R.D. Dixit (Scrophulariaceae) is an endemic and critically endangered plant used in the treatment of various types of ailments and diseases like leprosy, tuberculosis, paralysis, piles, intestinal worms, constipation, leucorrhoea, fever, spermatorrhoea and as a blood purifier. Review of literature reveals that no pharmacognostical study has so far been carried out. The genuine whole plant sample of Alectra chitrakutensis was collected as a part of the study and subjected to macroscopic and microscopic investigation. The air-dried whole plant powder was extracted with different solvent systems such as hexane, acetone, chloroform, methanol, and ethanol and finally with sterile water and preliminary phytochemical analysis of the extracts including HPTLC assays were done and the R_f values were determined. Physico-chemical characters, fluorescence characters and extractive values of the whole plant powder in different solvent systems were also determined. The pharmacognostical parameters studied, may be used as a tool for the correct identification of the plant and also to test the adulterants if any. The present paper reports a systematic pharmacognostic study on Alectra chitrakutensis for the first time.

Abstract

Experiments were conducted the xerophytic Aloe vera (L.) Burm. f. plant samples of three age group viz. 20 days, 40 days and 60 days old plants in order to estimate the change in productivity (total yield) and protein content under differential water stress conditions. The plantlets were subjected to different water stress conditions under excess, optimum and deficient water supply under water-logging, daily-watering, alternate-day, bi-weekly, once-a-week water supply conditions. It was found that the total productivity and protein content was maximum in once-a-week watered plants and minimum in daily-watered plants indicating that the cultivation practice adopted for best production of the crop should be based on intermittent weekly rather than continuous water supply to the plants. Water-logged conditions were detrimental for their survival.
